  • Understand Short Term Travel Insurance Exclusions Before Making Purchases

If you have made the decision to purchase short term travel insurance, then you have made a very wise decision. Savvy travelers know that this type of insurance offers affordable protection in a variety of travel scenarios, and that it can save them quite a bit of money and frustration when problems arise. However, if you do not carefully review the exclusions of the policy, you may be stuck facing the same high costs of medical care you were trying to avoid.

Exclusions outline what is NOT covered under an insurance policy. This will vary from policy to policy, but some common exclusions are pre-existing conditions and care that is deemed to be elective or not absolutely medically necessary. If you do proceed with obtaining treatment for something that is considered an exclusion within your policy, you will not be able to use your insurance to aid in covering the costs. That means you will be responsible for 100% of the resulting bills yourself.

That is why it is so important to thoroughly read any policy's exclusions prior to making a purchase. Once you have made your purchase, you are locked into that plan. But if you read the terms in advance, you may be able to avoid purchasing a policy that is inadequate for your needs. And you can then seek out an alternative plan that does offer the points of coverage you need.

Do not assume that all short term travel insurance policies are created equally. Each will have different exclusions clearly outlined within their terms, and depending on what those conditions are and what you are suffering from, certain policies may be of more value to you or your family than others. A little basic research before making your purchase can assure you of the level of coverage you need, and save you money later on.
